The beach south of Leisure Island
From south of Moturiki (Leisure Island) the beach is open to dogs all year, with long stretches of sand for a run and a swim. The exceptions are near the Omanu Surf Club and inside flagged lifeguard areas.

The Mount has some of the best dog walking in Tauranga, as long as you know where dogs are allowed. I'll pick your dog up from home in Mount Maunganui, Omanu, Arataki or Bayfair, take them somewhere they're welcome, and bring them back happy and towelled off.

Where dogs can go at the Mount
The rules change along the coast and with the seasons. Here's where I take dogs, and where I don't.
Shark Alley
The stretch from Moturiki to the rocky outcrop. No dogs from 1 August to 31 January. From 1 February to 31 July, dogs are allowed on lead.
Omanu Surf Club
No dogs on the beach and dunes in front of the surf club. Dogs must be on lead in the surf club car park and when passing through.
No dogs, all year
- Mauao, including the base track
- Mount Main Beach from Moturiki to Mauao, including the walkways, grass and dunes
- Pilot Bay, from Mauao to Salisbury Avenue
- Moturiki (Leisure Island)
- Inside flagged surf lifeguard areas, and within 10 metres of a playground
Rules may change
Tauranga City Council's draft dog bylaw proposes extra rules at the Mount, including dogs on lead along the Marine Parade coastal path and no dogs in the coastal dunes. I keep up to date, so you don't have to.

Questions
Mount Maunganui dog walking questions
Can you take my dog on Mount Main Beach?
No. Dogs are banned all year from Mount Main Beach, Pilot Bay and Mauao, including the base track. I take dogs to the beach south of Leisure Island instead, where they're welcome all year outside the surf club and lifeguard areas.
Are dogs allowed at Shark Alley?
Only from 1 February to 31 July, and on lead. From 1 August to 31 January no dogs are allowed there.
Do you pick up from the Mount?
Yes. Pick-up and drop-off is included in Mount Maunganui, Omanu, Arataki and Bayfair.
What about hot summer days?
On hot days I walk early in the morning or later in the afternoon, carry water, and keep walks shorter if it's too warm. We also stay well clear of flagged swimming areas, where dogs aren't allowed.
